Worse for Usagi, a new kid named Ann was also competing for Mamoru. In episode thirteen of the season, the end of the Makai Tree Arc, Moonlight Knight reunited with Mamoru, restoring his memories. Ann, who Mamoru and the Sailor Senshi discovered were actually their enemies in disguise, left Earth along with Ail, leaving Mamoru open for Usagi.

With his memories restored, he and Usagi officially become a couple and Tuxedo Mask returned, but they soon find their relationship disrupted after the arrival of the Black Moon Clan and Chibiusa. During the Black Moon Arc, Mamoru began having dreams again much like the previous season. This time, a mysterious voice kept appearing in his dreams, telling him that if he were to be together with her, the world will perish.

Mamoru didn't believe at first but soon became troubled. He temporarily broke up with Usagi, but still came to aid her during battle as Tuxedo Mask and hung out with her as normal friends.

Usagi was, nevertheless, heartbroken. She thought Chibiusa was the reason for the breakup and once mistaken another girl, Motoki's sister, to be his new girlfriend. Mamoru would act very cold towards Usagi and once approached Motoki for advice on how to forget about Usagi.

Eventually, Usagi did finally come to understand the real reason for the breakup and accepted it and they got back together.

It was revealed that the nightmares were sent by King Endymion, who used the dreams to test the bond between him and Sailor Moon, as their bond would be crucial to defeating the Black Moon Clan.

Mamoru, as Tuxedo Mask, continued battling the Black Moon Clan with the Sailor Senshi until the clan was finally defeated in the second to last episode of the season. With Usagi preparing for her high school entrance exams, Mamoru suggests they don't go on dates after she performs poorly on one of her tests, which leaves Usagi in tears. After Usagi loses her ability to transform into Sailor Moon after her brooch is damaged by a Daimon, Mamoru attempts to cheer her up by showing her an abandoned house full of stray cats.

Tuxedo Mask protects her from the Daimon Nekonneru while she is unable to transform and tells Usagi to run away, but she refuses. Instead, she stands with him holding his hands and, when the Daimon attacks, it is completely repelled and their loves creates the Spiral Heart Moon Rod. On her birthday, Usagi got disappointed at Mamoru for not knowing what day it was, even though she never even formally told him when her birthday was in the first place.

She wanted Mamoru to buy her a pair of glass shoes she liked. Mamoru eventually found out and bought the shoes, which Kaolinite infested with dark energy. Mamoru was temporarily captured but was freed by the Sailor Senshi.

Mamoru becomes very busy with his college thesis throughout the series but still continues to help Usagi on her mission. Near the end of the series, Queen Nehelenia begins to spread spider webs to shroud the earth in darkness, which causes Mamoru to feel pain.

As his condition worsens, he was forced to stay behind after it was revealed from Pegasus that his entire body is in pain because he is physically linked to earth. In the first arc of the 5th season, when Chibiusa is about to leave for the 30th Century, Mamoru falls victim to the "shooting stars", which are actually glass shards from Queen Nehellenia's broken mirror.

He accidentally gets one caught in his right eye, causing him pain. He begins seeing images of Nehellenia. This, along with the pain, causes him to become rather agitated, and even violent. During his date with Usagi in the park, he slaps her hand when she was trying to help him, but apologizes.

He becomes irritated when his computer rings when he is working, and yanks out the keyboard. He remembers what Usagi said, and decides to take a rest. After the fight, Usagi and Mamoru walk back to his apartment. Usagi asks if he really is OK, and he assures her that if he rests, he will be better.

He then enters his apartment. While washing his face, trying to see whatever is in his eye is out, Mamoru mentions that he feels that his body does not feel like his own. Queen Nehellenia appears to him as an illusion, with her assuring that she will take all that Usagi loves away from her.

His right eye glows yellow. Soon, he is completely entranced by the spell. Like most other people affected, he becomes obsessed with mirrors, constantly looking at them and buying several, refusing to live on with his current life.

When Usagi enters his apartment to see if he is alright, she accidentally steps on a mirror, and he becomes mad. He then apologizes, saying that he hasn't been himself. Mamoru tells her that he is not well and will get some rest, but soon returns to the mirrors. In the s anime, Mamoru was a complete jerk to Usagi upon their first encounter -- when she was only 14 years old and he was Again, she was only 14 years old when they met, and still, the older Mamoru went after her with no mercy.

If Usagi hadn't given it back in turn, his constant ribbing may have been a roadblock on her way to personal growth and developing the confidence needed to be Sailor Moon. Over time, Mamoru's cruelty subsides long enough for him to allow Usagi's best friend, Rei, to swoop in after the pair already established an ongoing relationship.

While Mamoru never technically encouraged Rei, he never put his foot down either, becoming quietly complicit in driving a wedge between her and Usagi. Mamoru would eventually settle down as he grew older and more mature, but his personality in the beginning isn't easily forgotten. With the strum of a Spanish guitar , behold: Tuxedo Mask has arrived! A single rose disrupts the villain's finishing blow, rescuing Sailor Moon and the Guardians once again.

Or is Tuxedo Mask's signature entrance just another pretentious and useless stroke of his ego? Given that Sailor Moon often finds herself in sticky situations, it's true that she often needs help. She has the other Guardians for that, though, and Tuxedo Mask just complicates the situation rather than offering anything useful to the battle. Paired with a poorly timed soliloquy often focused on being a gentleman or the latest in Tuxedo fashion or whatever -- honestly, it's easy to tune him out -- Tuxedo Mask leaps into action and is promptly incapacitated by the much stronger villain, giving the Guardians an opportunity to unleash hell.

Tuxedo Mask is the equivalent of throwing a raw steak in the path of a charging Rottweiler. His only use is as a meaty distraction and nothing more than that. To some, he may have been a very over dramatic love interest, but Tuxedo Mask was actually a very well-thought out character with a lot of hidden secrets. Throughout the manga, the original anime and the recent reboot Crystal , Tuxedo Mask has gone through everything from design changes to massive character development.

His appearance left lasting impacts not only on Sailor Moon , but also on the audience watching. The more we learned about his personal life as a wealthy young man living in the city, who just so happens to fight crime in an expensive suit at night, the more we fell in love. This design concept was the work of the original animators, who wanted to add something both romantic and dangerous, considering his relationship with Sailor Moon.

The original animators seemed to think so and gave him one that really fit his persona, including a sweet cape swish and hat throw.

It was super fabulous while it lasted though! Tuxedo Mask has been criticized for not really helping out with the fight. Rather, in the original anime, it seemed that all he could manage was to throw a rose and let Sailor Moon do all the work. This "message" was usually words of encouragement. A little strange, seeing as he often would never end up in the fray himself, but he nonetheless offered.

A good example of this is her first fight ever! She feels powerless and scared against an enemy, but then a dashing man in a cape and mask appears to tell her not to cry and to keep on fighting! As she watches him with tears in her eyes, Sailor Moon refuses to take advice from strange men. The original animation had a lot of small-time voice actors from Japan who got big after Sailor Moon rose in popularity.

Furuya had been in the game for a while before doing Tuxedo Mask. Furuya had been an actor, voice actor and narrator for a while before playing Tuxedo Mask, but most of the other actors were either just starting out or had not yet made a name for themselves.

There are actually several hints that Mamoru Chiba is in fact Tuxedo Mask. Of course, the haircut and facial features should be enough for most viewers to draw this conclusion, but Mamoru has sort of been the Clark Kent of the Sailor Moon universe. Apparently, a mask that only covers a small portion of your face seems to do the trick. Along with many of the other strange, ego-boosting things Mamoru owns, he also has a Tuxedo Mask puppet. This means he actually has a puppet of himself.

Where do you even get a puppet of yourself, Tuxedo Mask? This little guy makes his appearance in an episode where Chibi Usa is having a rough go of it. Seeing his future daughter upset, Mamoru tries to cheer her up and introduces us to this weird item he not only owns, but knows exactly where it is in his house at all times.

Of course, it appears he can use it for some defensive maneuvers but not much else beyond that, since we don't see him make use of it in any enchantments or spells.

This might be the reason people tend to think his character is some sort of magician or warlock. It does sort of pull his look together though, so it could be a character design decision.
